The aim of all affords of civilisation is the extension of life quality of each
individual human being and of society as a whole.
In industrialized society, economic success is on first priority, mostly very short term
focused. Nations and societies messure this success by economic growth. The whole modern economic systerm is based on this one dimentional, economic view. Further, there is no exit strategy yet. At the same time it has to be said that, the industrialized countries have a four times higher energy consumption than the emerging markets and a ten times higher than developing countries. Since two generations we are living the so called economic miracle on developing countries costs, and not last on spoilage of the global ecosystem. That the actual ambition of life quality is missed within this system, is not astonishing at all. Apart from the limitedness of recourses, an ingenious continuation with the usual is impossible.
As our site, we have chosen the greek island of Hydra, which is part of the Saronian
Islands. It was colonized in primeval times, about 200 years ago the inhabitants prohibited the use of the wheel on the island. Till this day you can move exclusivly by foot, or on donkeys across the beautyful island. Beside the town of Hydra, only a few settlements and some secluded monasteries do exist.
The main issue of the design task adresses the relation of a society of consumption to life quality. Value systems, way of life and stress symptoms of our society should be questioned by a project of reflection and regeneration. We raise the question, if it is possible to accept the cycles of nature, exclusivly put on regenerative sources and simultaneously raise quality of life? Therefore we selected the island of Hydra as our scene. The programme is going to be a location of conciousness and recovery.
