Course Content
Based on a comparison of different structural systems and materials, the course will impart the understanding of appropriate and efficient structures. As Sustainable Design requires a minimal impact on the surroundings and the environment the structural system gives the possibility to reduce the grey energy demand of a building. As a result the structure will be part of the design more as an aesthetical attribute then a supporting structure for the shell.
Learning Objectives
The learning objective is to get a better understanding of design and structure as complementary elements. All considerations will be proved in the section, plan and elevation in scale 1:20.
Approach and Format
Students will calculate various structures through exercises to get an idea of form and dimensions of load bearing structural elements, and will then use the structural elements as design elements.
